1993.  A friday night in the attic of my parents Third Ward, Houston Texas home. Me and one of my best friends, Jawara Green, and two tapes: Wu-Tang Clan’s Enter The Wu Tang (36th Chamber) and A Tribe Called Quest’s Midnight Marauders. I had heard Award Tour and while I liked it I didn’t love it, but I knew I needed to hear the album more than anything else at that moment. As each song finished it seemed to be getting better and better until the robotic choppy voice of Laura Dann, female host of the Midnight Marauders album announced:

“This concludes your Midnight Marauder listening program. Press any key to return to the main menu.
I looked at Jawara in disbelief, “That’s not it is it?” He gave me the ninja please look and just waited as the guitar riff and Minnie Riperton sample filled the air. Lyrics to Go was incredible of course, but I needed more. This album was too good to be over already, and I wasn’t in any rush to listen to Wu Tang. I mean who in the fuck is a Wu Tang?
