SPORTS: NCAA Tournament- Sweet 16 Recap »
Mar 242012

I knew damn well Michigan State wasn’t making no Final Four, at least not this year lol. With a slew of loaded teams in the tourney this year, Draymond Green (who will be a marginal pro at best) as their best player, and no other notable pro prospects on their roster, Michigan State didn’t look like a contender to me at all. When the tournament committee made them a #1 seed, I felt it was all on the strength of Tom Izzo’s past tournament glory and politics, as the Spartans became one of the rare #1 seeds with 7 losses or more during a regular season, while Missouri (I know they lost, but still) were relegated to a #2 seeding with a far more impressive schedule in my eyes.

But after advancing through the first 2 rounds fairly easily, Izzo and crew found themselves facing a red hot Louisville team who highlighted the Spartans weaknesses in route to a 57-44 drubbing of Michigan State, which was the lowest tournament point total that had ever been put up by a Spartan team. Hopefully Tom Izzo finds some STANDOUT recruits after this embarrassment cause his squad just didn’t have the players to pull off a run this time. Better luck next year guys

P.S. Shouts to Peyton Siva, who has been playing PG as well as anybody in the tournament so far..#salute

Wisconsin had a chance at tournament glory AND the opportunity to take out one of the favorites to win it all, but messed it all up with poor decisions/shot selection at the end of regulation to let the Fab Melo-less Syracuse Orangemen narrowly escape with a 64-63 victory on Thursday. This is the first time Jim Boeheim has made it past to the Elite 8 since 2003, but I doubt he’ll be leaving with a cutting of the net this time around, but more on that later.

I tried to told y’all bout Florida!! After getting what I thought for them was a lowly #7, the Gators have been on fire, winning every game by at least 10 points and playing as well as any team in the tournament so far. The run continued Thursday as Florida took out Marquette 68-58 in the Sweet 16, advancing to the Elite 8. Though the Gators have been under the radar in comparison to the other media darling programs this season, the masses need to stop sleeping on this group cause they are for REAL.

Sullinger and the Buckeyes continued to look impressive (much to my dismay) in their 81-66 victory over the Cincinnati Bearcats, advancing to the Elite 8 where I hope they lose cause for some reason I just cant stand Jared Sullinger. But thats another story for another day.

My beloved Tar Heels narrowly escaped their first game since losing PG Kendall Marshall to injury, outlasting Ohio 65-73 in OT. Even though Tyler Zeller played out of his mind in route to a 20-20 game, Carolina looked somewhat lost without their floor general and will be hard pressed to make it to the Final Four, let alone the Title game playing like this. Get it together guys!

Kentucky continued to look like the favorites to win it all while avenging their lone regular season loss with a 102-90 win over a resurgent Indiana program led by Tom Crean, who I believe is a shoo-in for Coach Of The Year honors in my opinion. What I do know is by the end of this season we’ll know if John Calipari FINALY got over the hump, or if he fell short of expectations for what seems like the millionth time.

The homie Thomas Robinson (check out his backstory, there’s no way you cant root for the kid) and the Jayhawks took out Cinderella hopeful NC State 60-57 with good defense by Jeff Whitney (10 Blocks), and T. Rob’s 18 Point and 15 Rebound effort. Sorry Wolf Pack..guess y’all ordered that shipment of glass slippers all for nothing.

The Team Most Likely To Underachieve has been able to stay out of their own damn way lately, advancing to the Elite 8 for the first time since I can remember with a win over the thug-life Xavier squad 75-70. Quincy Acy played a huge part in the victory with 20 Points, 15 Rebounds, and 3 Assists while Tu Holloway continued to look like a 1st round pick with 22, 4, and 3 in the losing effort. We all knew Xavier wasn’t a title contender in any way, but I applaud them for overcoming the adversity and making it this far. #salutes
