AUDIO: The Combat Jack Show Feat. Dallas Penn & DJ Ben-Ha-Meen (The Ralph McDaniels Episode)

February 8, 2013 in Audio, Editorial, MUSIC

It’s the Box That Rocks! Ralph McDaniels, founder of the seminal Video Music Box talks thirty years of history. Highlights include how Big Daddy Kane shot someone causing him to miss “The Symphony” video shoot, how we wasn’t fucking with Mr. Magic at first, gunplay at NaS’s “It Ain’t Hard To Tell” video shoot, running with a young and grimy Russell Simmons, allowing a young Jay-Z to play hype man for the Notorious B.I.G. and how really good he is in these streets. This is #RapHistoryMonth b. #Newmanati.

Another classic episode of the Combat Jack Show, you’ve already read the description so just know that I played a mean 50 Cent set to celebrate the tenth anniversary of GRODT and a Bob Marley set in honor of what would have been the great legend’s sixty eighth birthday. Get the downloads below.

EDITORIAL: Is 2013 The Year Of G.O.O.D. Music?

January 8, 2013 in Editorial, MUSIC

In 2012, the crew/label that had the best campaign was Top Dawg Entertainment with their Black Hippy collective shining throughout the year. They started the year strong when Schoolboy Q’s independent album Habits & Contradictions was dropped, in the spring Ab-Soul released his independent album Control System, they signed a deal with Interscope Records, and it all culminated when Kendrick Lamar’s major label debut good kid, m.A.A.d city hit the stores and had the industry on lock. This year, the collective that should escalate to another level is Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Music.

EDITORIAL: Why Do Rappers Use So Many Features?

December 19, 2012 in Editorial, MUSIC

everybody
This past weekend, one of hip-hop’s iconic albums had their 20th anniversary. That record is Dr. Dre’s debut album, The Chronic. It is arguably the most influential hip-hop album of all time because of several things it brought to the forefront.

The Chronic took gangster rap and smoothed it out for the mainstream, introduced Snoop Dogg to the masses, made live instruments just as important as samples, took sequencing and skits to another level, brought rap out of the crack era into the weed era and according to Public Enemy front man Chuck D, it also introduced the idea of having multiple features on an album.

EDITORIAL: Do You Care That Ma$e Is A Free Agent?

December 17, 2012 in Editorial, MUSIC

On December 12, rapper/pastor Ma$e announced on MTV’s RapFix Live that Bad Boy boss Diddy finally let him out of his contract after being on the label for 16 years. He also claimed that if he would sign to an artist the only two would be Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Music imprint or to Drake who recently signed his OVO label to Warner Bros. Records. This is great news for the Harlem native but should fans be excited to hear a new album from the former Harlem World general?

To me, Ma$e will always be on my radar due to he was on the first rap song I remember hearing on the radio when the “Been Around the World (Remix)” was released in 1998 (I was seven years old at the time).

December 14, 2012 in Sports, Sports Editorial

As a fan and purveyor of this culture for nearly all of my life, it has always been evident that sports and the competitive culture we call Hip Hop go together like bread and butter.
